The concept of
martyrdom and offering oneself at alter of truth, justice or believes was
alien to Indian culture. And there is no mention of any martyr in Indian
history prior to the advent of Sikh Gurus. The way to martyrdom was led by
the Guru himself and the fifth Nanak was the first to lay down his life for
upholding the freedom of believe and free expression. It inspired and infused
such a spirit amongst the Guru's followers that the Sikh history is replete
with numerous cases of martyrdom, be it the Ghallugharas of 18th century or
those of the 20th century. We have made an endeavour to record one such
portion of history.
This directory is not about those thousands of Sikh pilgrims and devotees
that were shot in cold blood by the Indian troops at Darbar Sahib in June
1984. It is also not about all those Sikhs who fought but were either
arrested or escaped. This directory is about those who had given up their
lives fighting the Indian invaders, when the latter desecrated the Darbar
Sahib. It focuses specially on those who preferred to die, than surrender.
For the Sikh nation they are martyrs of faith.
This is a small
attempt to record and compile the heroics of those brave Sikhs who fought a
pitched battle at Amritsar in June 1984 to defend the most sacred shrine of
theirs against the Indian invasion. This document is also a rebuttal to those
Sikhs who in connivance with the Indian Union are attempting to erase this
period from public memory. We have brought out this directory with a hope
that it will provide an inspiration to the youth of the Sikh Nation.
