Observe Guru Teg Bahadur’s martyrdom day as
‘Human Rights and Religious Freedom’ day on Nov 24 Monday November 20th, 2006
The appeal was made in the form of a resolution adopted at a Dal Khalsa convention held at Ramdas, 50 kms from Amritsar. Organizing its first convention in the border belt, the organizers asked the Union government to correct all errors and misgivings about Sikh Gurus from the textbooks published by the NCERT. Pointing out that Ninth Guru sacrificed his life to uphold human rights and religious freedom of the common men. His sacrifice was unparalleled in the annals of the recent history, read a resolution. Taking exception that ‘hind-di-chadar’ (cover for Hindu) has been prefixed with Guru Teg Bahadur, the president of the party Satnam Singh said the guru was in fact ‘dharam di chadar (cover for religion). He said the guru tasted martyrdom to fight against tyranny and to protect the oppressed class irrespective of their religion and caste. He said most of the Sikh history has been either written by non-Sikhs or under the influence of ruling elite. He urged the Sikhs to rewrite their history free from outside influence. Another resolutions demanding free access to Pakistan situated Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib, opening of Wagha border on the Indo-Nepal pattern and easing of visa restrictions to Pakistan were also adopted. The resolution was read by party general secretary Kanwarpal Singh who said his party would send their demands in writing to the government for the implementation. Harchranjit Singh Dhami, another senior leader criticized Akalis for toeing Hindutva line. He said voters should get awaken as polls to assembly were round the corner. “The electorate must realize that what was good and evil for them before casting their votes”. Criticizing pro-industrialist policies of Captain Amrinder Singh's government, he said the Congress would have to pay the heavy price in the coming elections for the atrocities and highhandedness it has unleashed on farmers. Bhai Mohkam Singh of Damdami Taksal, Naraien Singh of Akal Federation also spoke on the occasion. |
