Hoshiarpur Convention on October 12, 2003
A large gathering of devotee Sikhs reaffirmed that Sikhs are unlike Hindus
Sunday October 12th, 2003
In a blistering attack against the RSS and VHP for describing the Sikhs as Hindus, Dal Khalsa categorically stated that
like Hindus "Sikhs were neither idol-worshippers nor they believe in thirty-three crore Gods and Goddesses (devi-devtees)".
Addressing a large gathering of Sikhs assembled at Singh Sabha Gurdwara, Harcharanjit Singh working president of the
Dal Khalsa accused the Sangh Parivar for spreading terrorism under the garb of so-called nationalism. Asserting the separate
identity of the Sikhs, he said that unlike Hindus, we believe in One God (Waheguru). Sikhs have their own traditions,
history, scriptures, calendar, language and culture. He said that the BJP led government was patronizing the likes of K S Sudharshan and Parveen Togadia who had challenged the fundamentals of the Sikh religion during their visit to Chandigarh and Amritsar respectively. Speakers after speakers attacked Shiromani Akali Dal for joining hands with the BJP. Interestingly, they made an appeal to silent Hindu majority to nail the likes of Sudharshan and Togadia as they claimed to represent Hindu aspirations." We are for peaceful co-existence. Hindu brethren must realize that acts of RSS and VHP people were disturbing the cordial relations between both the communities", said Dal Khalsa general secretary Kanwar Pal Singh. He said Sikhs were fast losing their patience. Unless we demarcate the religious boundaries categorically, the forces with Hindu-first agenda would keep on describing the Sikhs as part of Hindu society, he observed. The message of the conclave was clear: All sinister moves to create confusion about the unique identity of the Sikh Panth in the garb of Hindu-Sikh brotherhood is likely to be met with stout resistance. The convention called to discuss Sikh religion vis-à-vis casteism virtually turned into RSS bashing. Sikh intellectuals like Dr Gurdharshan Singh Dhillon former president of Institute of Sikh Studies and Prof Jagdish Singh Mukherian also spoke during the occasion. The conference adopted resolution-condemning castiesm that has plagued the Sikh society in spite of clear directives from Sri Akal Takht Sahib incorporated in Sikh code of conduct. It was observed that we, the Sikhs were supposed to develop a casteless society as taught by Ten Gurus but ironically we had failed in our mission. The well-being and protection of downtrodden has always been basic principle of the Sikh philosophy, stated another resolution. A call was given to make efforts to remove caste stigma from the society. "Those who believe in the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib should not fall prey to any forces that were bent to divide the Sikh society". The violence in Talhan was made the reference point. It was felt that certain forces have tested the waters by pitting Dalits against Sikhs in Talhan. Another resolution states that it was unfortunate on the part of Akali Dal that its alliance with a caste-based party has by default given recognition to casteism. In another significant decision, Dr Manjinder Singh and Ranbir Singh were appointed president and general secretary respectively of the Hoshiarpur unit of the Dal Khalsa. The prominent leaders of Dal Khalsa who spoke during convention were Sarbjit Singh Ghumaan, Advocate Dalbir Singh Bath, Iqbal Singh Mann and Surinder Pal Singh. |
