Makkar’s volte-face has left the community high and dry
True to popular perception, he has turned up as a spineless person

The volte-face by SGPC president on the singing of Vande Mataram is a shame. It has not only made Avtar Singh Makkar a subject of ridicule but exposes of his naivety on vital subjects concerning Sikh religion. By issuing self-contradictory statements on Vande Mataram, he has made mockery of himself.

Like a school going kid, the SGPC chief has got a scolding from his political mentor for airing his “independent” view on Vande Mataram thanks to BJP’s annoyance.

His U-turn has reduced him to a puppet dancing on the tune of his political mentor. By succumbing to political pressure, Makkhar has belittled the significance of the post and dignity of the institution.

We challenge those who are equating the singing of song with patriotism. Their perception on the issue is irrational and narrow. Our opposition to making Vande Mataram mandatory is justified. There is no point in succumbing to the blackmailing attitude of pseudo-patriots (read Hindutva).
